HIGH COST OF DATING
*** Do people still go out on dates anymore ? The radio boys were talking about a date to the Grizzly game . They said it was at least $100 dollars rock bottom. As Maynard G. Krebs said " that's rough Riff".
I glad it was not that way at Medina all those years ago . I was a dating fool back then. Like Jr. sings 'I run through a lot of good women" & I sure did. Medina girls ,a couple from Milan , a bunch from Humboldt , & the Bonanza load from Jackson.
How did I get all these dates aside from my stunning good looks ? You won't believe it but the Mystic was a big spender.When people who have known me for years as a penny pinching miser recover I will explain.
All things are relative . In those days if you made $100 a week that was good money. I had my boxing money , my domino money, plus a part time job at ITT. So I had some money to spend.
I was good for dinner, the walk - in movie , & whatever else she wanted. For those small town country girls this was a major night out. I might as well have been Prince Raineer as those little honeys were concerned.
Let's do a cost analysis on those dates. Gas was 30 cents a gallon so I could fill up Daddy 's Deuce & a Quarter for less than 6 dollars . You could eat like a King at a lot of good places for less than 10 dollars . I think the walk -in movie was $1.75.
So there you have it , for less than an Andy Jackson , a $20 dollar bill you had a big night on the town.
And absolutely free was my favorite part ; the Parking. I think that is something that has gone with the wind. Not sure couples still do that . Finding a good spot was crucial. Cemeteries were the most popular places being as they were usually quiet. You could spend a lot of time scouting for a good spot.
The girls did not mind a little kissing & listening to lies after a big night out. If you were dating several girls you had to keep your stories straight. You sure had to keep the names straight . She seemed irritated if you called her the wrong name.
My favorite story . I dated this girl from Bradford for a while. I called her up & asked her out for Friday Night . She said she couldn't , I asked why. She said " I am getting married Friday night " Never one to be discouraged I said " How about Saturday night ". She paused a moment & then said she didn't think she could go Saturday either.

THE VIETNAM WAR
*** It is funny how some events are turning points in your life .The Vietnam war was a big one for me .
I did not have to go to Vietnam. I had a 2 - S deferment & a high lottery number. But it was the threat of going that put me in college.
My Dad made me go. Daddy said " Son I don't think they are crazy enough to let you have a loaded gun but we can't take the chance . If you go over there you won't last a week . We have got to get you in school." Daddy had lots of confidence in me.
So off to college I went . I would not have gone otherwise. I would not had an opportunity for a career in education or a coaching career. I don't know what would have become of me . There was nothing I could do career - wise around Medina.
I was a small time hustle guy who played cards & dominoes in the back room at the barber shop & played the games down at the pool room. Great future Huh!
After college & a boxing run, I had opportunities in coaching that in no way did I merit. I was among the worst players but ended up with the championships.
What would have happened if there had been no war & I had not gone to college ? I will never know.
Small as Medina is, we had 3 to die in the war . We had another come home dead but it was more than 30 years till we buried him.The person he was & the person he could have been died in that jungle . A friend lost a fiancée & a husband to the war.
I believe Richard Nixon prolonged the war to win re-election. I will always hold that against him . Our government played us for fools & lied to us the whole time . What we thought was right was wrong .This was the beginning of our distrust in government.
I don't know why the Lord moved things as he did . I wonder why those had to die & why not others like myself.

POST - GAME IMPRESSIONS
*** The Jets appear to have some great days to come . Mark Sanchez may be the real deal. He was great for a rookie.
The Jets have all the parts & just need to hold together a while. They are above average in all phases of the game.
*** The Colts have Peyton Manning . That says it all . I doubt the Colts would break even without the Big P !
One of the writers said Jim Caldwell was an offensive wizard. I fell out of my chair . You & I have as much to do with the Indy offense as Caldwell.
Peyton Manning runs that offensive show period. Tom Moore acts as Peyton's Yoda. Caldwell has never spoke to Peyton other than to ask for his autograph. Or maybe to find out the time of practice.
*** Favre just could not play second fiddle. He had to be Gunslinger Brett & it cost them . Brett threw 46 times which is about 16 too many . Brett took the focus away from the running game verses one of the weakest run defense in the NFL.
When Brett goes Gunslinger he gets shot down as often as not. Favre is like an old heavyweight fighter . He does not know when to quit. He keeps coming back & coming back.
Brett my man ,you blew it at the end of regulation. Just the facts.
*** I think Sean Payton got drunk before the game . His head sure was on Bourbon Street. Where did those play calls come from ? I am surprised they let Sean ride the bus back to the complex. I thought I saw him after the game asking around for a ride.
Breezy & the gang just took what the Vikings gave them which was the game . Proud of the Saints for their first Super Bowl trip.
*** General Neyland said " the team that makes the fewest mistakes wins" . Looks like the old man was right again.

SHOTS IN THE DARK
*** I have really enjoyed watching Memphis Tiger basketball . I know they are not the powerhouse they used to be.
The Tigers play hard with a short bench & are in every game . They are making the best of a bad situation . I hope the fans will stay with Josh when the road gets rough.
UTEP had more Memphis players than Memphis had . That is hard to believe. If the Tigers can get the local guys they will be okay.
*** Look for D - DOO to have a mighty rough ride his first year in K- town. The Vols have no proven QB & lose 4 of 5 in the O-line. The Big Orange Nation will have to endure some tough times.
*** Only Alabama & Arkansas have a proven QB returning which gives them a head start for next year.
*** This late in the season it is hard to pick against the best QB . So I think the Colts will get the Jets this time. The Colts have the best QB in football & will play for real this time. The Jet running game could give the Colts a fit if they keep Manning on the sideline. You have to reduce the number of possessions to beat the Colts.
The Saints have the second best QB ,Drew Brees. The Vikings will bring a lot of heat but Breezy can hit the hot receiver with the best of 'em.
*** 2 - 4 - 6 - 8 Get ready to consolidate. It will be horrible but the Powers that be are pushing hard for it . They have stole all they can steal with the city & county separate . The Money - Boys have to put it together to grab all of the pie. Fight hard to keep what you have.

IT IS WHAT IT IS
*** Memphis fans hate John Calipari . Tennessee folks are mad at Lane Kiffin. They should not be.
The fans feel like a rejected lover,cast aside for a more attractive love. That is the way it is in today's mercenary coaching world.
Coaches go for the best deal. They are always looking to up-size. They have no love or loyalty for any school . It is just business.
Cal will be at Kentucky till a better deal comes along. Then he will be on the road again . The same with Lane.
Bama fans better not give your hearts to Nicky . Saban has been known to wander.
This mercenary world exists due to the Big Money being paid today. Coaches are always looking to play the Job Lottery.
*** Jimmy Sexton is the man . I told you the Tennessee coach would be who ever Jimmy decided. I think every candidate was a client of Jimmy.
*** I missed 3 of 4 NFL games. Only the Jets came through for me . I think the Chargers must have a defect in their DNA. They are very talented but always come up a little short.
Favre had a great day . I sold him short . Wade Phillips was put on this earth to suffer. I bet Wade lost a lot of dogs when he was a kid. I will ask Bum if he knows.
Peyton Manning is the best . As long as # 18 is in there the Colts have a chance. I wish Peyton enjoyed it more . He has the look of an acute hemorrhoid sufferer . Big P is not that way in his ads.

Oh please do not tell me Tennessee is going to hire David Cutcliffe . Grief & panic have overcome the Orange Nation. This is more Insane than Lane.
Cut is a very nice man whose inspirational impact is about the level of cold oatmeal. Cut is the right fit for Duke where they care little about football.
The name of the game is Recruiting . That is 98 % of college football said Bear Bryant. Cut could not recruit a hog to slop.
Recruiting Wars - Cut vs Saban , Cut goes head to head with Meyer or any of the sharks in the SEC ! How does that sound ?
Today coaching requires a super- charged energy level . Cut 's energy meter clicks in there with the guys who have diabetes ,depression & ED.
Lane was a Turd but that is the most fired up the Vol Nation has been in years . Cut takes them back to the coma stage.

SHOCK - SHOCK - SHOCK
***** Insane Lane has left the building. He blew out of K - town heading toward the setting sun.
All the promises, dreams & hopes are in shambles . I do not think there is anyway for the Big Orange to put a positive spin on this.
I thought Lane & Daddy - K got things rolling last year. Now the only thing rolling is the moving van.
It is three weeks to signing day & the Vols have no coach. That great group of recruits will most likely bail.
Who can the Vols get ? It is mighty late to be coach shopping . Some are hollering for David Cutcliff . They might as well have Fat Phil back. Those who said Tommy West should join a leper colony.
This is a hugh setback for Tennessee . The only question is how many years to recover.
Tennessee next coach is whoever Jimmy Sexton chooses . Big Jimmy was Phil & Lane 's agent & will probably be the agent of the new coach.
Saban ,Spurrier, Nutt, Jimbo Fisher,Muscamp, Tuberville & Bill Parcells belong to Sexton . Cutcliff & West do also. So check Jimmy's roster to see who the new man will be.
Look for the Vols to be in the bottom of the SEC for a while. This hurts worse than when I stepped on that rake by the T- box . The only good balls I hit all day.

A WILD WEEKEND
***** The NFL wild card games were great. What a start to the playoffs.
$$$ THE CARDS - PACKERS was a great game . Most points scored in a play off game ever. The PACK was one of the hottest teams coming in.It is a shame they are gone so soon.
If the CARDINALS could play any defense they would win the Super Bowl.Their offense is that good . Best group of receivers in football . Warner still good in twilight years.
$$$ PATS - RAVENS was a shocker . Never seen Belichick & Brady look that bad. The RAVENS also ran over the PATS. The COLTS could be in for lots of trouble with this bunch.
$$$ COWBOYS - EAGLES was a hugh victory for Dallas. The COWBOYS are hot going into the showdown with the VIKINGS . Favre better play within the team & not be gunslinging.
Winning cures everything . Every one loves Romo now & even Coach Wade is getting some love .Wade is going to do an ad. for the latest constipation treatment. If the Boys stay hot look out!
$$$ BENGALS - JETS was proof that the JETS are tough . New York is the only team left with a rookie coach & QB. The COLTS also have a rookie coach . The JETS bring more heat than any team in the league.
***** Tommy Tuberville really wanted back into coaching . He is going to Lubbock of his own free will . Most folks leave Lubbock soon as they can . Buddy Holley for one.
You know what they say : Lubbock is not the end of the world but you can see it from there . Lubbock is only an hour from Dallas ,by phone .The only people in Lubbock are the ones who could not make it to Oklahoma or the ones in the witness protection program.
Tub loves to play golf . He will get plenty of practice on his wind shots. Tub will fit in with the good ole boys better than Leach did. Are Momma & the kids coming to the Panhandle or is Tub going to Lone Ranger this one ?
There are some football problems also . Finishing third in your division is a very good year . Tub will be in the wrong half of the Big- 12 to really do much damage. It will be hard to do as well as Leach did but Tub will be one of the boys.
I know Jimmy Sexton got Tub a good contract . I hope Jimmy put in an escape clause if Tub has to run.

WHOLE LOTTA THINKING GOING ON
***** Petey needs to think hard before he leaves USC. I know the
Seahawks will pay 7 million a year .Carroll makes over 4 million
now. Why not take the money & run ? Pete has better players than
anyone he plays . 8 plus wins are a sure thing at USC. In the NFL
Ole Pete will be on a level playing field. Those other guys will have
great players also. Another think coming, Pete's cheerleader style
did not work well in his two previous NFL stops .Those Pro-Guys
don't really get into singing & eating ice cream at practice. Pete
can stay at USC for life , win a bunch of games , sing in the
sunshine or go work 24/7 in the NFL & get his tail kicked half the
time. You can live on 4 million a year almost as well as 7 million.
Gosh I wish I had that problem . Just think , trying to make it on
only 4 million a year . WOW that is tough !!!!!
***** What was Nick thinking ? Taking the ball when you have the
world's best defense. Then that fake punt . Then not playing
enough power football. I wondered if Dipstick Nick had bet on
Texas. Also Nick was mad about his Gator- aid shower. Does this
boy ever loosen up . I think he has way too much starch in his

when everybody was talking about that Wildcat thing." That little
squirt Colt gets hurt & we have to play a true freshman . I wish we
could snap it to Newton & hand it off on that jet to one of those

running game next time" Mack makes great adjustments , problem

world's best defense. Then that fake punt . Then not playing
enough power football. I wondered if Dipstick Nick had bet on
Texas. Also Nick was mad about his Gator- aid shower. Does this
boy ever loosen up . I think he has way too much starch in his
drawers.
***** Mack Brown was thinking " Snot ,I wish I had paid attention
when everybody was talking about that Wildcat thing." That little
squirt Colt gets hurt & we have to play a true freshman . I wish we
could snap it to Newton & hand it off on that jet to one of those
fast dudes. You can bet your sweet hiney I'm gonna work on my
running game next time" Mack makes great adjustments , problem
is he makes them on the Monday afterward.

RANDOM SHOTS
*** We are very sad for the death of Carmie Davis. Mr Carmie was Collierville High 's # 1 Fan . Mr Carmie in his chair was a sure thing at all home games. He also loved the Lady Vols. A great guy who will be greatly missed .
*** Three of the four NFL playoffs this week are rematches, of last week . Tell me who has the advantage; the winners or the losers . I think the Packers will beat the Cardinals again . I look for the Eagles to get the Cowboys this time. I just don't think Dallas can get em in back to back weeks. No ideal what will happen with the Jets & Bengals.
*** The top seeds in the NFL playoffs are the Colts & the Saints. Both have a first round bye. Both are coming in off losing streaks ; the Colts have lost their last two ; the Saints their last 3. It is hard to keep your MO when you have not gunned your engines for a month . The Mystic thinks once you get it rolling you keep it rolling. I don't think either one will make the Super Bowl . Hope I am wrong.
*** A rare development in the Memphis - Syracuse game; both teams played zone defense . It is unusual for one team to play zone in D - 1 basketball , but both teams playing zone happens as often as Paris Hilton wears her drawers. The zone gave Memphis a chance to win . The Tigers could not handle the Orange man to man . This was evident when the Tigers were forced to man up late in the game . I love the zone . Consider this ; You use a light press to delay & knock 5 to 8 seconds off the shot clock . Now they have 27 to 30 seconds to break down your zone . I think they will put up some hurried poor shots.

IT IS THE ECONOMY STUPID
*** That was the battle cry that got Bill Clinton elected President. The economy is the # 1 concern of most Americans.
I have studied economics at two of the best schools in the nation . That would be MIT & JSCC. The highly regarded Medina Industrial Trade School & the renowned Jackson State Community College.
I have learned that the more you learn about economics the less you know. Economic thinking goes in circles. The cure is the cause . That type of chicken or the egg type of thinking.
An example would be ; Unemployment leads to less consumer spending which leads to more people losing their jobs which brings a reduction of spending ; on & on. The Flying Jenny just goes faster & faster .
I have also done an in -depth study of the work of Robert Kiyosaki & have arrived at a profound conclusion. In my professional judgement as an economist " We are in deep DOO - DOO".
In MIT terms let me explain the problem.
# 1 As a nation we spend more than we make . We have a negative balance of trade . We buy more than we sell . It is hard to be a world leader when you owe eveybody money. We must be creditors not debtors.
#2 People go where the jobs are . We have sent most of our jobs overseas. Business can make the product cost less for the consumer due to reduced labor costs. What they forgot is if the consumer does not have a job he can not buy no matter what the cost.
#3 The Haves are becoming the Have- it Alls. The Rich have always taken from the poor . That is kind of how they got rich in the first place. In the past the rich have left a few slices of the pie for the little guy , not anymore. Them suckers are eating it all.
#4 Bailouts - That is where the little guys { taxpayers] pay off the rich man 's bill . These rich boys get millions in bonus money for screwing up while Debby Sue doing piece work pays the tab in taxes. No body bailed out Robert Earl when he could not make his truck payment or his house trailer note . His job at the plant was sent to Brazil.
Who is going to get us out of this? Obama Yo Mama !! Did you know poor oppressed Michelle made 400K last year ? Wonder why they play the Jefferson's theme instead of Hail to the Chief ?
I don't know a soul at Medina whose Old Lady made $400 K any year . I'm thinking it is going to take a long time to dig out of this mess.

NEW YEAR THINKING
*** Oklahoma State should be ashamed of their performance in the Cotton Bowl. Ole Miss was bad but the Cowboys smelled. I don't think they would have won 9 games playing an SEC schedule.
*** East Carolina outplayed Arkansas & should have won but their little kicker just could not make one . I really feel bad for him & hope he can get past the hurt.
*** Virginia Tech was too strong for Tennessee . The Vols were lucky to be in a bowl. Insane Lane got the Big Orange as far as they could go.
*** Welcome to the Big Time Cincinnati . Florida was a tad tougher than those Big East candies you rolled . Of the 5 unbeaten teams the Bearcats were no better than fourth.
*** Air Force had the most innovative concept in the bowl games . The Flyboys ran an I - Formation with 3 wide outs. The Falcons varied which 2 wideouts were on the LOS. This plus cross motion created overloads & flanking positions. Really nasty to defend !
*** Mike Leach was not fired for doing anything to little crybaby Adam James. It was all about money . Mike won a contract standoff with the Tech powers that be . Leach was doomed from that point . They were not going to pay him . Simple as that !
*** LSU still has the players . The Tigers need new coaches. They have no identity on offense . They run from one thing to another like a man with an upset stomach in a restroom with all seats occupied. That I - Formation with 3 wides is worth a look .
